For this session, I was asked to prepare a presentation about my teaching and practice and bring in a piece of writing about pedagogical theory. I chose Teaching to transgress by bell hooks, a book I’ve been dipping in and out of for the past few months and trying to apply bits to sporadic lessons with little success.
Giving it my full attention and thinking how I could apply it to my teaching is something I’ve been unable to do in my job so far. a crowded inbox and 3 sets of tutees spread across three courses
hooks’ ideas seemed to permeate all my discussions with my peers. the overarching theme of the sessions seemed to be -how do I reconcile my principles as a teacher/artist in an institutions that runs itself like a business? I’ve been agonising and picking over that question like a scab since I started, but often in an unstructured, incoherent monologue in my head. being pushed to articulate in front of a group of peers, who were voicing similar dilemmas was cathartic.
